about

Lament for the San Patricio (D.Barrett) - The Batallón de San Patricio, or Battalion of Saint Patrick, was a Mexican Army unit engaged in the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. It was comprised mainly of 200 Irish Catholic
immigrants. Many had escaped the Great Famine in Ireland. All were deserters from the United States Army or disenfranchised from the American dream of Manifest Destiny. The largest mass execution in
United States history happened after the Mexican loss at the battle of Chapultepec. There, fifty Saint Patrick’s battalion members were executed as traitors by the U.S. Army.
